Funding Sources - Grants from Organisations (H-W)

Heritage Lottery Fund

The Heritage Lottery Fund distributes money raised by the national Lottery to support all aspects of heritage in the UK. It gives grants up to £50,000 to support a wide range of projects involving the local, regional and national heritage of the United Kingdom. Projects must satisfy 1 or more of 4 criteria;

1. to encourage more people to be involved and make decisions about their heritage;
2. to conserve the UK’s diverse heritage;
3. to ensure that everyone can learn about, have access to and enjoy their heritage;
4. to achieve a more equitable distribution of grants across the UK, by making more grants available to parts of the UK and communities which have received little funding from HLF to date.

Landfill Tax

Landfill Tax Credits (LTC) can be spent on projects which provide and improve public amenities (Category D), or create, restore and manage areas specifically to increase biodiversity (Category DA). Up to £50,000 can be awarded to a project. Biffa and Hanson distribute LTC within 10 miles of their operations to registered Environmental Bodies (EBs). Schools cannot directly become EB’s but a “Friends of” group can be set up which can. There is guidance on this on ENTRUST’s website, in their “library” section, including a model constitution. To find out if your school is within 10 miles of a Biffa or Hanson operation, visit their websites and use the post code search facility.

BiffaHanson

Furthermore, both organisations offer smaller grants directly, rather than through LTC, to organisations within 10 miles of their operations. Organisations do not need to be registered EB’s to receive this funding.

Biffa Small Grants Scheme is open to any not-for-profit community led organisation with its own bank account. Groups can apply for between £250-£5,000 although the total cost of your project must be no more than £10,000. Funding is available for Wildlife and habitat conservation and creation, improving opportunities for informal education and lifelong learning and access to sport, culture or recreation.

Hanson Community Grants Scheme is open to any local community group or not-for-profit organisation with its own bank account. Grants of £250 - £4,000 are available for projects which create amenities for, and involve, local communities or wildlife and habitat conservation and creation, on sites with public access.
