Index of Recycling within Cheshire A to H

This chart is to help you find ways to recycle the majority of your waste within Cheshire. The majority of the information is for household waste. All business waste (including that arising from Local Authority premises), should be disposed of under the relevant Duty of Care Regulations by an authorised waste carrier.

This chart will be continually updated and any additions/ amendments would be appreciated.

A

Aluminium Foil

Clean foil can be placed in any can bank. See cans for further information. Some charity shops and schools also collect clean foil for fundraising purposes. Dedicated foil containers can be found in Macclesfield.

Appliances (Toasters, Fridges etc)

Try to sell appliances when you have finished with them, or donate it to a jumble sale. When buying, consider a second hand purchase or a reconditioned model. All household waste centres have special skips or collection points for all items containing metal. Fridges and freezers will have CFCs removed and the metal content of appliances will be recycled.

Artificial Limbs

The Roehampton Rehabilitation Centre in London runs a scheme to send these to poorer nations. They should be returned via your local hospital. Contact: 0208 789 6611.

Asbestos (bonded)

This can be deposited at Clayhill Industrial Estate, Neston . Keep it damp and bag or wrap it in polythene before transporting it. Do not break or cut asbestos. Call the Environment Agency on 0870 506 506 before disposing of any other type of asbestos.

B

Baby Clothes and Equipment

Pass on to friends or relatives, donate to Charity shops or jumble sales. Advertise them for sale in the local papers or take to an National Childbirth Trust Sale.

Batteries

Use the mains whenever you have the choice; use rechargeable batteries and a battery charger if you need to use batteries. They are cheaper in the long run, having a life of 4-5 years. These are widely available and recyclable once exhausted. For battery recycling:
Car batteries - Take them to any of the household waste centres or return to the garage when purchasing a new one. NiCad rechargeables - Manufacturers will accept their own brand rechargeable batteries. Please do not send them anything else.

  • Bosch – offers a 20% discount on new battery packs when old ones are returned
  • Draper Tools – will take back spent battery packs in exchange for a 10% discount on new ones
  • Duracell – Call 0800 716434 for freepost label and jiffy bag
  • Ever Ready – send to Energizer UK, Recycling, Freepost LOL2311, Dunstable, Beds, LU5 4YY
  • Panasonic – send to Panasonic UK Ltd, Panasonic House, Willoughby Road, Bracknell, Berks, RG12 8FT
  • Uniross – send to Uniross, RECYCLING, Unit 4, West End Trading Estate, Blackfriars Road, Nailsea, Bristol, BS48 4DJ
  • VARTA – send to VARTA Ltd, Cropmead Industrial Estate, Crewkerne, Somerset, TA18 7HQ.

Silver oxide cells
Used in watches, calculators and some cameras. These batteries are valuable because of the silver content and so most jewellers will accept them back for recycling. Mercuric oxide hearing aid cells -
Now phased out, but old ones should be returned to the NHS via your local hospital, who will ensure safe disposal. Other household batteries- All household waste centres now have recycling facilities for all household batteries (not car batteries).

Bicycles

Will be repaired or purchased by most local cycle shops or try and sell through local papers. Barrowmore Trading Estate has started a re-cycle unit, bicycles will be repaired and resold to benefit People with Learning Disabilities. Contact Barry Hulme on 07900 991518 for further details.

Books

Borrow books from your local library or friends, or buy second hand from charity shops or second hand bookshops. Donate unwanted books to charity shops, jumble sales, schools or sell to your local second hand book shop. Some book banks are available around the County.

Take to a charity shop or jumble sale.

Buttons

Donate to charity shops, if you cannot re-use them yourselves.

C

Cans

A number of can banks exist around Cheshire. For your nearest can bank, click on the appropriate link.

Cardboard

This can be composted in small amounts. In Chester, residents can use the CHEERS kerbside collection for cardboard. 2 recycling banks in Macclesfield also accept cardboard.

Carpets

Could be sold second hand, or may be welcomed by local allotment, gardening, voluntary service or furniture reuse groups

Carrier Bags

Try to re-use as much as possible, or purchase bags for life from supermarkets. Recycling facilities exist at all Morrisson and Tesco stores. Residents of Chester can also place plastic bags in the CHEERS scheme.

Christmas Cards

Collection facilities will be available in all WHSmith and Tesco's stores in January 2007

Christmas Trees

All collection facilities for this year have now ceased. Locations for 2007 will be added shortly.

Cigarette Coupons

Send to: BKPA, Bordon, Hants, GU39 9JZ (to benefit kidney patients).

Clothes

Try to sell unwanted clothing through your local paper, donate it to charity shops, place into textiles banks or use clothing exchanges. For your nearest textile bank click on the appropriate link below

In addition the County provides textile recycling facilities at the majority of its Household Waste Centres.

Coins

Some charity shops will accept old and foreign coins.
Alternatively old money can also be sent to: Leukaemia Research Fund, 43 Great Ormond Street, London, WC1N 3JJ.

Cooking Oil

At the present time facilities do not exist for the recycling of domestic cooking oil. However businesses should contact one of the two following companies to arrange a collection service.

Computers

Individual computers are currently difficult to recycle but forthcoming European legislation will mean that facilities will be set up soon. However, if you are disposing of a number of computers there are many charitable and business groups who will refurbish the computers for use by second-users. For more information click here

E

Everything

Anything that could be of use by another person can be offered on Freecycle Freecycle groups match people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them.

F

Furniture

If your furniture is still usable a number of voluntary organisations around Cheshire, provide a free collection service for redistribution to individuals in need. For the more information see Cheshire Furniture Re-use Forum.

G

Garden Waste

Compost your own garden waste or take to your nearest household waste centres. Some districts are also offering kerbside garden waste collections in pilot areas. Contact your local recycling officer for further information.

Glass

All the districts provide recycling facilities for glass bottles and jars. To find your nearest glass bank, click on the appropriate link below.

In addition the County provides glass recycling facilities at the majority of its Household Waste Centres.
Other types of glass such as mirrors, light bulbs, Pyrex, Visionware, crystal, window glass or items such as china, earthenware, porcelain and clay pots have a different chemical composition from the glass used to make bottles and jars. They must not be placed into the bottle banks, as even a relatively small amount could result in a whole load being rejected. If the mirrors etc are not broken, please donate to a charity shop, otherwise they should be wrapped carefully and placed with your general rubbish.
