Questions and Answers
Why should my school have an environmental review?
The Eco Audit project is a good means by which to improve your schools environmental performance and reduce its running costs. It is free and confidential and takes a maximum of two hours to complete.
How long does the audit last?
The audit lasts no more than two hours, although this depends on the size of your school.
Who needs be be involved in the review?
The number of school representatives depends upon each individual school. Ideally there should be a representative who is familiar with the day to day running of the school and workings of the building i.e. site manager or head teacher. You might also like to involve a small group of pupils.
Do I need to prepare anything prior to the review?
It is a good idea to have a quick read through the audit template, which is sent out prior to the review taking place, as this will provide you with an idea of what the review will cover.
What takes place during the review?
The Eco Audit Co-ordinator meets the school representatives and explains how the review will be carried out. Following this brief introductory meeting, a walk-around of the school takes place.
What does the review look at?
The review covers a variety of issues including; energy and water consumption, waste, purchasing, transport, school grounds and potential funding sources. The review can also highlight other initiatives available to Cheshire schools such as Safer Routes to School, Junior Recycling Club etc...
What happens after the review?
After the review, the school receives a report which details recommendations to help reduce the school's impact on the environment and also highlights areas of cost savings. In addition to the report the school also receives a Certificate of Participation and a Contacts List.
Is there any help available after the initial review?
Within the original audit report a score is given with a corresponding future audit frequency. This indicates how often a school should consider a follow-up audit. On average, schools usually have one a year, in which case they will be contacted one year after the initial review to see whether they would like a follow-up audit or any further guidance. The Eco Audit Co-ordinator is available for any queries following the audit and a website resource is currently under development.
Once my school has had an environmental review what can we do then?
If your school is addressing environmental issues for the first time there are lots of ideas provided in the report you receive after the review visit. For schools who have been working on eco issues prior to the environmental review taking place you may like to work towards the national Eco Schools Programme.
