School Grounds Handbook
As part of the work of the School Grounds Action Group, to ensure schools receive the best possible information and inspiration on improving their grounds, a new publication has been produced, called the “School Grounds Handbook”. This website acts to support the information available in this document.

The new document is a specially designed A4 lever arch file, containing a wide range of practical information on:
- Why school grounds are important
- How to go about starting and running a school grounds project including:
- Site survey, Consultation, Design plans, Funding the work, Implementation, Maintenance and Sustaining momentum
- Detailed practical information on a range of design ideas which currently includes ponds, growing food, trees & hedgerows, quiet and infant areas, active play areas and grounds for wildlife. Information includes:
-
Why to have them, where to locate them, how to create them, what to avoid, ideas for how to further develop and use them and how to maintain them.
-
Inspirational case studies from in and around Cheshire
-
Contact details for who can provide help and assistance
-
Factsheets which cover a range of extra information from how to build a bird box, make compost or what you can do in the grounds at different times of the year.
The intention is to provide regular updates to the document so that sections can be added to, or replaced, as necessary. One copy of this document has been made available to each school in Cheshire. Further copies are available to any school, individual or organisation at a cost of £15 plus p&p. View a sample from the document
