Re-Registering a Birth

What is Re-Registration?
In certain circumstances it is possible to re-register a child's birth if it took place in England and Wales.
Both parents are required to attend the re-registration, the purpose of which is to include the father's details in the birth entry (where these were not included in the original registration). |
 |
If parents subsequently marry each other following the birth of their children these births should be re-registered. If required, the child's surname can be changed to that of the father. For further information, please contact the Register Office where the birth or births were originally registered.
Who Needs to Attend the Re-Registration?
If the parents are not married generally both parents should attend the Register Office together to make the new registration. If the parents are married and both parents appeared on the original birth registration then only one parent needs to attend.
Where can I Re-Register?
If the original registration was made within Cheshire, please contact your local Register Office to make a appointment.
If the original registration was elsewhere, please contact the Register Office where the birth occurred.
What costs are involved?
There are no fees charged for the re-registration. The parents may decide to purchase a new birth certificate. Please see our registration services fees page.
Who can I contact for further information?
An application form and further advice can be obtained from any Register Office, or by viewing the General Register Office web site.
