What is the Knowledge of Life in the UK Test?
It is a multiple choice test that needs to be passed in order to be granted permission to permanently live in the United Kingdom in addition to meeting the usual requirements for settlement.
The test is designed to demonstrate applicants knowledge of the English language and general knowledge about the United Kingdom.
Who needs to complete the test?
Applicants for settlement in the UK
From 2nd April 2007, adults who apply for settlement in the UK (indefinite leave to remain) will need to provide evidence of Knowledge of Life in the UK.
Applicants for British citizenship
Applicants for British Citizenship who have not demonstrated Knowledge of Life at settlement stage will have to do so before they can be naturalised as British citizens.
How do I study for the test?
From the 2 April 2007, you must study the second edition of the handbook called 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship'.
The handbook is available from most good bookshops and is priced at £9.99.
