Birth Certificate

What is a copy certificate?

A copy certificate is a copy of an entry made in a registrars book.  All certificates, whether obtained at the time of the event or at a later date are copies of this original entry.  The original entry remains in the registrars book but a registrar is able to provide a certified copy of the original entry on request.  A certified copy certificate provides the same information as the original entry and is the same as the certificate that would have been received at the time of the birth, death or marriage.

Where will a certificate be held?

Since 1st July 1837, all births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales have been recorded, at least in theory, by local Registrars.

  • The information is recorded in civil registers and includes names, dates, addresses and occupations. Birth certificates usually include the names of both parents and the mother’s maiden name. Marriage certificates usually give the name of the bride and groom’s fathers and their occupations.
  • These records are kept in local registrars offices but every quarter are sent to the Registrar-General.
  • If you know that a birth, marriage or death occurred in a particular registration district you can contact the particular register office either for a certificate if you have precise details, or for an appointment to conduct a search of the indexes, for up to six hours on any one day. It may take a few days to arrange a search owing to limited accommodation.

How do I apply for a copy certificate?

Copy certificates can be obtained from any Register Office in Cheshire.   Alternatively, you can search indexes online and order a copy certificate through the Cheshire BMD website.

What information do I need to supply?

We need to request the following information as a minimum, this is due to the volume of registrations in Cheshire each year and will helps us to deal with your request quicker.

  • Full name and postal address of the applicant

Births

  • Name at the time of birth
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Names of both parents at the time of the birth

Marriages:

  • Names of both parties
  • Place of marriage
  • Date of marriage

Deaths:

  • Date of death
  • Place of death
  • Full name of the deceased
  • Last occupation of the deceased
  • Last address of the deceased

What costs are involved?

A fee is payable to obtain a copy certificate.

I have been told that I need an original copy of my certificate, will a copy suffice?

The Cheshire Register Service will only provide you with a fully certified copy of your registration.  These certified copies are the same type of document as is issued upon initial registration.

If you have been told that an original copy of a certificate is required for a particular purpose, it is likely that a copy certificate will suffice.  However this should be confirmed with the organisation requesting sight of the certificate.

Where can I obtain further information?

If you would like further information please contact your registrar.

"(Your staff member) is efficient and pleasant and most helpful.  Other members at your office also portray the same characteristics which is credit to you and all your staff".
