What is Re-Registration?
In certain circumstances it is possible to re-register a child's birth if it took place in England and Wales.
Both parents are required to attend the re-registration, the purpose of which is to include the father's details in the birth entry (where these were not included in the original registration).
Alternatively, a re-registration is required by law to reflect the fact that the parents have been married since the child's birth. At the re-registration the child can have their surname changed to that of the father, or be given a ‘double-barrelled’ name. |

Who Needs to Attend the Re-Registration?
Both parents should attend the Register Office together to re-register the child's birth and this is the easiest way to do so. However, it is possible for either parent to make a statutory declaration in front of a solicitor or other person who is legally able to witness an oath, acknowledging parentage of the child. It is also possible for either parent to seek a Court Order naming the father. In any of these cases the birth will be registered again and certified copies of the re-registered birth can be purchased from the registrar.
