The amount the Council can spend on the road network, and the things it can spend on, are closely controlled by the Government. Most of the money for highway & bridge maintenance and smaller (under £5m) integrated transport projects comes through the Local Transport Plan (LTP) process. The LTP can only contain bids for certain categories of spending.
Larger projects (ie those over £5m) are no longer part of the LTP funding process. In 2005 the Government announced that larger schemes would be subject to regional prioritisation and funded from a Regional Funding Allocation (RFA). Three Cheshire schemes are included in the North West Regional prioritised list of schemes for the period up to 2015, these are:
- A34 Alderley Edge Bypass
- Crewe Green Link
- Crewe Station Gateway
