Since 1991/92 the annual Local Transport Plan allocation has included a block of resources specifically targeted at improving the safety of the highway network. Since then around £7,000,000 has been spent on Local Safety Schemes in the area now administered by the County Council. The schemes implemented have resulted in an accident reduction of almost 50% at the sites treated. Total budget over one year is now around £600,000.

A534 Nantwich Road Work on the A534 Nantwich Road contains new cycle crossing facilities and cycle lanes on the route through Crewe. The National Cycle Network Route 74 between Crewe and Nantwich was signed in 2002 and is planned to extend eastwards to Sandbach and westwards to Wrenbury where the route to provide a link from Sandbach to Nantwich along the A534, opening up access to Crewe railway station, places of work, schools and colleges, etc. as well as the surrounding countryside.

Bridge Assessment The ongoing bridge assessment programme will finally be completed in the coming year when outstanding work on Network Rail’s bridges will be finished.
Bridge Structural Maintenance It is anticipated that this will allow for the urgent and unplanned structural repairs to the County Council’s bridge stock of over 800 structures, including those recently inherited following detrunking.

Crewe Town Centre Access Strategy Improved levels of accessibility to Crewe Town Centre is required to enable it to meet the needs of an expanding local population and to address competition from other centres such as The Potteries and Chester. This wide ranging review of the transport infrastructure will commence this year with improvement works being carried out in future years. |
