Additional Safer Routes to School
(including TAHITI (Tytherington and Hurdsfield Integrated Transport Initiative) and Cycle Routes)
This project is a collection of initiatives designed to improve transport choice within the north Macclesfield area. It is focused on school and employment journeys and has a very broad partnership supporting it. Some measures have been implemented in the area as a part of the Macclesfield Package, but these works, now to be extended, have identified new partners through the Safer Routes to Schools project and local employers seeking to implement Green Travel Plans. The project aims to develop walking and cycle routes in the area, improve road safety and provide better bus services.

Bank Square and Pownall Park, Wilmslow

  • Bank Square - Installation of pedestrian crossing points, a new Zebra crossing and pedestrian refuges. Includes improved bus waiting facilities in Green Lane.
  • Pownall Park - Measures include speed cushions, road humps and raised junctions - the purpose of these is to reduce the level of 'rat running' through the area.

Handforth Town Centre Improvements
This project involves a collection of traffic management measures to provide facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. The scheme will reduce road space to reduce the speed of vehicles through the town centre. It will also environmentally enhance the town centre. There will be an unmanned display at Handforth library until the end of July for those wishing to view the proposals.

A537 Route Treatment Scheme
This scheme includes the improvement of the carriageway, signs and markings. There will be an investigation into speed restrictions, which will hopefully lead to the use of gateway treatments and speed cameras.

West Wilmslow Cycle Routes
This will improve pedestrian, cycling and public transport access to tackle school and work journeys through a co-ordinating group involving education, businesses, Local Authority and Groundwork.

Local Safety Schemes

neil.edgar@cheshire.gov.uk Tel: 01244 973619

Since 1991/92 the annual Local Transport Plan allocation has included a block of resources specifically targeted at improving the safety of the highway network. Since then around £7,000,000 has been spent on Local Safety Schemes in the area now administered by the County Council. The schemes implemented have resulted in an accident reduction of almost 50% at the sites treated.

Macclesfield Town Centre Works
Approximately £50k of the total budget will be allocated to a joint scheme with Macclesfield Borough Council and British Waterways. This scheme will improve access to the canal and provide a suitable link from the Black Lane/Buxton Road area to the local Primary school and to link into the Middlewood Way giving access to Tytherington High School.

Bridge Assessment
The ongoing bridge assessment programme will finally be completed in the coming year when outstanding work on Network Rail’s bridges will be finished.

Other Bridge Strengthening Schemes
In addition, the costs of dealing with the interim measures required on weak bridges (i.e. temporary traffic management measures), catering for urgent unplanned work, and advanced design will also be found from this block.

Bridge Structural Maintenance
It is anticipated that this will allow for the urgent and unplanned structural repairs to the County Council’s bridge stock of over 800 structures, including those recently inherited following detrunking.

A537 Hibel Road, Macclesfield
Being on a principal road, the strengthening of this Network Rail Bridge is a priority for both the County Council and the Department for Transport with its support through the Local Transport Plan. Network Rail, who will be procuring the works, have yet to carry out a feasibility study and therefore the programming and costs are not yet known.

Please contact john.violet@cheshire.gov.uk Tel: 01244 973690 for information on bridges
