Local Safety Schemes

neil.edgar@cheshire.gov.uk Tel: 01244 973619

Since 1991/92 the annual Local Transport Plan allocation has included a block of resources specifically targeted at improving the safety of the highway network. Since then around £7,000,000 has been spent on Local Safety Schemes in the area now administered by the Council. The schemes implemented have resulted in an accident reduction of almost 50% at the sites treated.

Cycleway Schemes

anna.geroni@cheshire.gov.uk Tel: 01244 973617

There are a number of cycle routes already in existence in the Borough. Some of these are linked to the National Cycle Network, others are leisure routes (e.g. Weaver Valley Cycleway, Whitegate Way) and some have been provided as part of the Northwich Package. It is intended that the network is developed in accordance with the adopted strategy and the following are proposed:

  • development of urban cycle networks particularly in Northwich and Winsford, focussing on routes that assist the journey to major places of employment and schools;
  • complementary measures in Northwich to build on the Local Transport Plan packages measures (e.g. traffic calming on sections of the Gadbrook Industrial Park - Northwich Town Centre route);
  • integration of routes, focussing on missing links (e.g. National Cycle Network to the Safer Routes to Schools network, Hartford; Winsford Marina to Red Lion pub, Winsford);
  • cycle parking (where physically possible) at all public places (e.g. libraries, local shopping areas, etc.); and
  • support for the completion of the inter urban cycle network, linking Winsford, Northwich, Delamere Forest and Helsby.

Northwich - on road measures
This provision will fund a package of discrete measures, which will form part of the section of the National Cycle Network in the Hartford Campus/Greenbank area of Northwich. The measures have been designed to compliment the main contract for cycle facilities in this area, which are being implemented by Sustrans.

Winsford area measures
Contribution to a scheme, providing a Toucan/controlled crossing, cycleway, and footway.

Route 70 - various
Cheshire Cycleway modifications to improve access and visibility for all users.

Bridge Structural Maintenance
It is anticipated that this will allow for the urgent and unplanned structural repairs to the Council’s bridge stock of over 800 structures, including those recently inherited following detrunking.

Please contact john.violet@cheshire.gov.uk Tel: 01244 973690 for information on bridges.

Please contact tim.pemberton@cheshire.gov.uk Tel: 01244 973938 for information on roads.

Future Major Schemes

Northwich Transport Strategy will enable the traffic infrastructure of Northwich to be provided in line with developments taking place with the Northwich Vision.

The key elements of the new proposed transport strategy are:

  • one-way system utilising both bridges over the Weaver Navigation.
  • Leicester Street and Station Road Roundabout improvements.
  • capacity improvements on the A556 at the Gadbrook Road junction and A530 Roundabout in Rudheath.
  • sustainable transport measures to help reduce town centre private car use.
  • a town centre urban traffic management and control system.
  • car parking management
