The Road Safety Unit (Highways Service) aims to; minimise road crashes and casualties, improve access to the highway for all, especially vulnerable road users, and address road safety issues that affect quality of life in Cheshire's communities. We will achieve these aims through a combination of Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Training and Publicity, working in partnership with others where we can. In this way we will contribute to wider service and corporate objectives that are consistent with these aims.

Red Routes – Are you at risk?
A new scheme to make drivers aware of routes around the county where they could be most at risk of being involved in a collision has been launched

Over the coming months, the Road Safety Unit and its partners in the Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership will be delivering high profile initiatives about these routes.

What are Red Routes?
'Red Routes' are 8 routes across Cheshire which potentially carry the highest risk to road users of suffering a serious or fatal crash. These Red Routes are easily identified with their unique red road signs, advising motorists of the number of crashes and people injured along these route in three years.

The Road Safety Unit has identified the roads to be included in the scheme based on a detailed analysis of road collision and casualty data. The Red Routes scheme gives greatest priority to those routes which are experiencing the more severe collisions resulting in serious injury or death.

Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership gets Interactive to Reduce Young Road User Deaths
It's no secret that a frightening number of young people are dying on our roads each year.

In an attempt to reduce this number, Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership (CSRP) has launched a unique interactive campaign dedicated to getting the safety message across to this notoriously ‘hard to crack’ audience.

The young driver campaign will run for 12 months from May 2008 and there are a number of activities planned including a new interactive website R8URM8 (‘Rate Your Mate’ in text speak) a celebrity viral and touring car events, all of which are set to interest and entice young people .

Lee Murphy, partnership manager at CSRP commented:

“The idea behind R8URM8 is to create a forum for young people to talk to their mates about cars, bikes and all things driving related. We want to encourage them to talk freely about their driving experiences and to rate their mates driving ability. Those who get a good rating, will then be in with a chance of winning a number of prizes.”

Lee continued: “Around 11 young people die on Cheshire’s Roads each year. New drivers in the UK are involved in 29 per cent of all collisions and one in five new drivers has a collision within the first 12 months of passing their test. With statistics like this it’s easy to see the gravity of the situation and the need to pro-actively tackle the problem.”

For more information please visit the R8URM8 website.

"Switch Off Before You Drive Off"

Personal Injury Collision Data
The Road Safety Unit is responsible for managing the Council's personal injury collision database for incidents that occur on the highway. This information is provided to us by Cheshire Constabulary, who are legally responsible for recording all relevant information to national standard. The Road Safety Unit uses the data to identify current road safety issues and problems, which in turn guides the annual road safety investment and work programmes.

To request collision data for a particular location in Cheshire, please download the application form and return it to the address provided on the form with the appropriate payment. If you have any queries, please contact Kim Barnes on 01244 973933.

Did you know....?

25% of collisions involving a Cheshire resident happens within 1km of their home address.

Setting the Pace on Speed
'Set the Pace - Make the Commitment' is a new campaign tackling the problems caused by inappropriate and excessive speed in local communities. It asks drivers and passengers to make a personal written commitment to drive or encourage others to drive at an appropriate speed for the environment and road conditions and always within the legal speed limit. The idea is that those who have signed up will simultaneously 'set the pace' of other motorists by their example. The campaign will be promoted by volunteers from community groups, organisations and businesses within their own localities as part of a proactive approach towards the improvement of the safety and quality of life in their neighbourhood. Find out more about Set the Pace and make your commitment today.

Road Safety Engineering
We investigate the occurrence and distribution of accidents on Cheshire's roads and devise engineering measures to reduce the risk of future accidents. The limited financial resources available are concentrated on sites or areas where personal injury accidents occur. Road Safety Audits are done at various stages in the development of highway schemes to ensure that they operate as safely as practicable. For further details please contact James Gibbins - 01244 973558.
