Speed Indicator Devices or 'SIDs' are temporary mobile interactive signs designed to alert passing motorists of their speed.
Make SID smile! If the motorist's speed is within the speed limit, SID rewards them with a smiley face. If it is above the limit, SID displays a frowning face to remind them that they should slow down. The device is a non-threatening way of encouraging drivers to observe the speed limit for the benefit of community safety and quality of life.
Recent research undertaken by Dorset County Council has shown that speeds are reduced by an average of around 5mph at sites where SID is being used.
SIDs are available for use by Parish Councils and recognised community groups on roads with a speed limit of 40mph or less. To make a request contact your local Area Highways Office in writing either, by email (see links below) entering 'SID Request' in the subject field, or by letter. Groups other than Parish Councils should make their application through their local Parish Council where one exists.
