Smartdrive

  • Up to 33% of all road crashes in any one year involve someone driving on company business.
  • Without doubt, the most dangerous activity we all take part in on a daily basis is the use of the roads.
  • The Road Safety Unit can offer you an interesting, practical and enjoyable training course run by expert trainers.
  • Smartdrive is a flexible course for companies and organisations and aims to
  • Extend driving knowledge, skills and confidence
  • Develop tolerance and consideration for other road users
  • Reduce driver stress
  • Reduce the likelihood of being involved in a crash, collision or other incident on the road.

The 2 hour classroom/theory workshop type session encourages course members to take part in discussions and exercises on defensive driving techniques, hazard awareness and risk perception. An optional one hour driving assessment can follow the workshop or be taken on a separate date. This is not a test but an enjoyable informal assessment of driving.

Below are some comments from attendees:

  • 'I have noted the Assessor's comments and I will try to apply them to my driving'.
  • 'I enjoyed the assessment and feel more confident as a result'.
  • 'I was pleased with the Assessor's comments, perhaps I'm a better driver than I thought'.
  • 'Will recommend this scheme to family and friends'
  • 'Very beneficial, it's 20 years since my driving test'.

Minibus Driver Assessment Scheme

All drivers who wish to drive a minibus on behalf of the Council must attend the Cheshire Minibus Driver Assessment Scheme (CMDAS), although other minibus driver assessment schemes may also be acceptable.

Briefings which cover health, safety and licensing requirements for the operation of minibus are held at school venues around the county and normally start at 4pm. There are also two evening briefings which are aimed specifically at youth leaders and other volunteers.

The briefing lasts for approximately one and a half hours and the practical driving assessment for one and a half hours. All practical driving assessments must be completed within 12 months of attending a briefing session.
