Sub-heading

The Road Safety Unit (Highways Service) aims to; minimise road crashes and casualties, improve access to the highway for all, especially vulnerable road users, and address road safety issues that affect quality of life in Cheshire's communities. We will achieve these aims through a combination of Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Training and Publicity, working in partnership with others where we can. In this way we will contribute to wider service and corporate objectives that are consistent with these aims. government think! road safety logo - click here for the website

Winter Driving - are you prepared?
Winter motoring requires special care and a little preparation if you're to avoid a breakdown or incident. The British winter is unpredictable. Bad weather can strike suddenly so the best advice when severe weather hits is to stay off the road. If you must drive, make sure you and your vehicle are prepared and that you drive for the conditions. Use this link to access tips and advice on safer driving this winter.

Please use this link to view a leaflet which shows winter gritting routes in Cheshire.

Remember to take extra care on Cheshire's 'Red Routes'. One of the typical collisions on some routes is loss of control when the road is wet and slippery. View the information below about Red Routes for more information on how to reduce your risk.

Red Routes
'Red Routes' are routes across Cheshire which potentially carry the highest risk to road users of suffering a serious or fatal crash. These Red Routes are easily identified with their unique red road signs, advising motorists of the number of crashes and people injured along these routes in three years.

red routes competition winner 2009 A high profile campaign is currently taking place on the two highest risk routes, the A540 Chester High Road and the A530 Middlewich Road. Use the links below to find out more information about each of the routes, including how you can help reduce your risk and make your local Red Route safer.

The lucky winner of the latest Look Out! Red Routes Competition is Kenneth Johnson from Crewe, pictured right receiving his prize of a Nintendo DS Lite Red with Brain Training and Sight Training software from Senior Road Safety Officer Justine Hart.

Mr Johnson who regularly uses the A530 to travel to and from work entered the competition at Leighton Hospital, he correctly answered a number of questions on the road safety campaign to scoop the prize in the competition, which attracted more than 500 entries.

The competition was designed to highlight the Red Routes initiative on the A530 Middlewich Road in Crewe - one of the highest risk routes in Cheshire.

Road Safety Engineering

We investigate the occurrence and distribution of accidents on Cheshire's roads and devise engineering measures to reduce the risk of future accidents. The limited financial resources available are concentrated on sites or areas where personal injury accidents occur. Road Safety Audits are done at various stages in the development of highway schemes to ensure that they operate as safely as practicable. For further details please contact James Gibbins - 01244 973558 or Jamie Fisher - 01244 973631.

Road Casualties Cheshire - Annual Report 2007
This document analyses road collisions and casualties in Cheshire during 2006, it also presents and compares figures from earlier years with the targets set by the Government for the year 2010.

To help with the viewing of this document we have divided it into easily downloadable sections, these sections can be viewed by using the link below.

Personal Injury Collision Data

The Road Safety Unit is responsible for managing the Council's personal injury collision database for incidents that occur on the highway. This information is provided to us by Cheshire Constabulary, who are legally responsible for recording all relevant information to national standard. The Road Safety Unit uses the data to identify current road safety issues and problems, which in turn guides the annual road safety investment and work programmes.

To request collision data for a particular location in Cheshire, please download the application form and return it to the address provided on the form with the appropriate payment. If you have any queries, please contact Kim Barnes on 01244 973933.

Did you know?....      25% of collisions involving a Cheshire resident happens within 1km of their home address.

Setting the Pace on Speed
'Set the Pace - Make the Commitment' is a campaign tackling the problems caused by inappropriate and excessive speed in local communities. It asks drivers and passengers to make a personal written commitment to drive or encourage others to drive at an appropriate speed for the environment and road conditions and always within the legal speed limit. The idea is that those who have signed up will simultaneously 'set the pace' of other motorists by their example. The campaign will be promoted by volunteers from community groups, organisations and businesses within their own localities as part of a proactive approach towards the improvement of the safety and quality of life in their neighbourhood. Find out more about Set the Pace and make your commitment today.
