- Don't panic. If you feel pain try to attract attention before moving. If you cannot get help try to crawl to a sturdy chair and use this as support. Sit on this for a while before standing.
- If you cannot get up, try to keep warm by finding something nearby as a blanket, tense your muscles to produce heat. Move from a cold surface to a carpeted surface.
- If you are in severe pain, can’t stand or use a limb, use the phone to contact the emergency services or a friend or relative. Alternatively, try to contact a neighbour by banging on a wall or the floor.
- If you do go to hospital it may be possible to arrange help which will enable you to return home quickly
- If you can move call your doctor who will be able to organise any help you need
- If you fall out of surgery hours and cannot contact your own doctor phone NHS Direct who will be able to advise you what to do
- Inform your GP after any fall, particularly if you were unable to get up off the floor on your own
