Care Homes with Nursing

Main heading

Sub-heading

What is a care home with nursing?

A care home with nursing provides full board accommodation, personal care and qualified nursing care. A nursing home has to have a professionally qualified nurse on duty 24 hours per day. Care homes with nursing should not be confused with residential homes which provide full board and personal care but not nursing care.

Who is nursing home care for?

Nursing homes are registered to provide care for people of specific ages and nursing needs.

All care homes have to be registered with The Commission for Social Care Inspection.

How much does a care home with nursing care cost?

The cost of care in a nursing home depends on the type of care that you need. The weekly charge made by a nursing home can differ widely from home to home. However, Social Services do have an agreement with nursing homes about the maximum amount Social Services will pay if they make arrangements for a person's care. How much you will actually pay for your care will depend upon your finances and whether you decide to make your own arrangements with the home or whether you use the Social Services contract arrangements.

If you have been assessed as needing Nursing Care the NHS will pay for the Nursing element of your care.  This can be at different rates depending on your level of need.

The two main options are:

  • You can make your own arrangements with the home.
This is where you reach an agreement with the home about the weekly costs and pay the home directly from your present income and savings or money from the sale of your house. If you do not have a lot of capital, you may be able to pay the home from Income Support and other benefits you claim from the Benefits Agency.

or

  • You can ask Social Services to help.
This is where Social Services enter into a contract with the home to provide the level of care that you need and Social Services then recover all or part of the contract price from you.
