Calibration Laboratory
If you require accuracy of measurement in terms of mass, volume or length then Trading Standards Calibration Service may be able to help.
Trading Standards operates a Metrological Calibration Laboratory at Backford Hall, Chester. We are able to calibrate mass in the range 1mg to 25kg (OIML Class M1) and can also demonstrate traceability to National Standards via NWML (National Weights and Measures Laboratory) for calibration of mass in the range of 1mg to 1000kg. Our mass calibration service is of particular benefit to customers who need to know the actual mass of the weights/test pieces they use, or who are required to provide proof of accuracy for quality assurance purposes.
Whether we are calibrating mass, volume or length measures which, are covered by our ISO 9001 registration, we follow detailed and documented procedures to provide our customers with confidence in the integrity of our reported results. Each item submitted for calibration is returned with a fully traceable calibration certificate acceptable for most quality systems.
Service Delivery - We offer a turnaround time of 3-5 working days from submission. For some calibrations a ‘while you wait’ service could be provided.
Weighbridge Test Unit

A Weighbridge Test Unit is available, carrying a skilled operator with a standard load of 24 x 1000kg cast iron block weights, a 400kg minimum load including hand weights. On request, the load can be configured to customer requirements with 500kg block weights or 500kg / 250kg roller weights.
Hire Weights
Trading Standards operate a weight hire service, we have a total of 50 tonnes available including 5,000kg of 20kg cast iron hand weights, 12 x 1000kg cast iron bar weights, 39 x 500kg cast iron roller weights, 25 x 500kg cast iron block weights and 4 x 250kg cast iron roller weights, all of which, are calibrated and traceable to National Weights and Measures Laboratory. Delivery and collection is also available at extra cost.
Bulk Fuel Meter
Trading Standards operate a bulk fuel meter hire service, available with a fully trained operator.
