Main heading

Sub-heading

New Regulations for businesses using ‘doorstep’ and ‘face to face” sales method

What are the Regulations

The Cancellation of Contracts Made in a Consumer’s Home or Place of Work etc Regulations 2008’

They introduce cooling-off periods and cancellation rights that consumers have when contracts are made during solicited and unsolicited visits by traders. They will give consumers greater rights in areas where they might be most vulnerable and create a level playing field for honest business

When do they come into force

1st October 2008.

Will it change how I do business

You will be required to give the consumer a written notice of their right to cancel, it must be prominently displayed in the same document, where the contract is completed wholly or partly in writing. Set the cooling off period at 7 calendar days (some businesses already offer a longer cooling off period for customers) you MUST do this whether you COLD CALL or not

How do I find out if they will effect my business

Cheshire County Council Trading Standards have prepared a detailed guidance leaflet, or you can contact the Business Support Team for advice on 01244 973708.

Where can I get further information

Further information about the regulations and the government consultation can be found on the Department for Business website.
