Introduction
The Council has implemented CCTV surveillance equipment within a number of county owned bus shelters throughout Cheshire. Aims of the scheme are to reduce vandalism and help address problems of nuisance, anti-social behaviour and to recover the costs of repair from the perpetrators, wherever possible.
The Council’s Executive awarded the contract to Yorkshire-based firm Vetatech who supply and monitor the tiny intelligent cameras which automatically record crimes taking place. |

Vetatech founder and managing director Bill O’ Brien said:
"The equipment is the next generation of CCTV surveillance technology because it is permanently recording and activates certain alarms when an incident occurs.
The old technology required operators to sit in front of screens looking at pictures. Our system will only alert a control room when something happens and will allow the remote download of images should this prove necessary.
We’ve been working with the Home Office from the start so all the footage that our systems record is acceptable as evidence in court and complies with the Data Protection Act. Each bus shelter also carries a warning that CCTV monitoring may be taking place.”
The scheme has successfully brought together many organisations with a mutual aim of tackling anti-social behaviour, providing safer public transport and improving safety in the community through partnership working.
The Council is assessing the success so far of a pilot scheme in which micro CCTV cameras have been fitted to six bus shelters across Cheshire.
