Partnership Working :: Facts and Figures :: Final Strategy
Cheshire County Council formed the 'Cheshire Waste Partnership' in 1999 in conjunction with the six District Councils to produce an Integrated Household Waste Management Strategy. This was designed to meet Government targets for increasing recycling and composting, and diverting waste away from landfill. Much waste that is thrown away represents a resource that could be re-used.
A Public Consultation on a Draft Waste Strategy took place between October and December 2001. The final strategy has now been signed up to by all partner authorities - Cheshire Household Waste Management Strategy.
The strategy has 3 key principles:
- Reducing waste
- Maximising composting and recycling
- Reviewing the need for energy from waste in 2004

- In 2006/07 435,672 tonnes of household waste were produced in Cheshire. This equates to approximately 1.5 tonnes for each household.
- In recent years waste volumes have increased by 5% per year - this will double the amount of waste produced within 15 years if maintained.
- 64% of Cheshire’s waste is sent to landfill. The other 36% being composted or recycled.
- Cheshire had a government target to increase recycling to 30% by 2005/06. We have exceeded this by achieving 31% in that year.
The Cheshire Waste Partnership are implementing policies to encourage the reduction of waste. Examples include:
