During 2000 each of the District Councils in Cheshire collected waste from 250 households in their Borough areas and delivered it to Chester’s Materials Reclamation Facility for sorting and analysis. The waste formed a representative sample from across all socio-economic groups within Cheshire.

The results revealed the average composition of the Cheshire dustbin to be as follows:

The top three components are paper (25%), garden waste (14%) and plastic (14%).

All Cheshire districts are working towards implementing kerbside collection schemes for the collection of recyclable materials from every household. A number of District Councils also offer collection schemes for garden waste using brown wheeled bins.
