Cheshire County Council has developed an arrangement with a number of farmers who are interested in composting green garden waste collected from the Household Waste Recycling Centres in Cheshire, and using the finished soil improver on their land. |

|
When the garden waste from the Household Waste Recycling Centres arrives on-site, it is inspected and any contamination, such as plastic bags, is removed. The waste is then shredded to a size which aids the composting process and ensures that bio-degradation is achieved. The shredded material is then formed into a 'windrow' (where the green waste is raked together to provide optimum conditions) for the composting process to begin.

Temperature readings are taken daily and when the necessary temperatures have been achieved, the material is turned ‘inside out’ to ensure that all the material is thoroughly sanitized. During the complete process, each windrow will be turned eight times.
The finished material is screened through a 28mm sieve and spread on the land where it provides structure to the soil, nutrients and trace elements to aid plant growth.
