Our waste ….. Our challenge (our previous public consultation)
During 2000 a public consultation leaflet was issued to all households in Cheshire. This provided valuable information about public views on a number of approaches in waste management. After taking these views into account, a technical consultant’s report was commissioned leading to proposals for a joint waste management strategy for Cheshire.
These proposals were the subject of a further public consultation which took place in November 2001 - Have Your Say - Our waste... Our challenge - a way forward for Cheshire.
In response, a total of 21,337 completed questionnaires were received, a response rate of over 7%. Overall, 95% agreed with the proposed new approach to waste management within Cheshire.
In summary, householders indicated that they are concerned about the problem of waste management. They were supportive of the objectives of the strategy, particularly ‘reuse, recycling and composting’ and ‘minimising the risks to health in the way waste is treated’.
Householders indicated that they are prepared to take action themselves to reduce the problems of waste. There was considerable support for reducing the amount of waste produced and separating recyclable materials, compostable waste and residual refuse. Respondents indicated energy from waste, which may involve incineration, should be considered once we have recycled and composted as much waste as possible. A substantial majority were prepared to pay to reduce the need for energy from waste.
