The 2008 Junior Recycling Officer of the Year Competition reached its final stage on Friday 11 July at Chester Zoo. We had an amazing response with over 50 pupils submitting an entry. This years Junior Recycling Officer of the Year was Beth Livesey from Woodfall Primary School in Little Neston. Well done to all the Junior Recycling Officers who have worked very hard this year.
The Junior Recycling Club is a highly successful initiative, established in 1993 in Primary and Junior Schools in Cheshire. The aim of the Club is to help promote recycling education. This is achieved by the nomination of up to two Junior Recycling Officers whose role is to persuade their school, friends and family to use the 3R's: Reduce, Re-use and Recycle
- Reduce your waste... When you go shopping, buy items that have very little packaging - it only gets thrown away when you get home! Also, say 'No' to carrier bags in the supermarket - re-use old ones instead or take along your own reusable bag, such as a 'Bag for Life'!
- Re-use your waste... Re-use things instead of throwing them away - margarine and ice-cream tubs can be re-used as lunch boxes, or food storage containers in the freezer.
- Recycle your waste... Instead of throwing it away, recycle as much as possible. Find out where your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre is and use it!
In 2006/07 we had 473 Junior Recycling Officers!
Each Junior Recycling Officer receives a recycling pack and a certificate (presented annually at a launch event in September). Each term they receive a Junior Recycling Officer Newsletter which they read out to the school in assembly. This contains competitions, poems and all sorts of recycling information. At the end of each year there is a competition to determine the Junior Recycling Officer of the Year. Significant sponsorship of the Club has been received thanks to the wonderful support of many local companies.
As part of their duties, the Junior Recycling Officers are encouraged to set up recycling schemes (principally for can and paper recycling) in school. For more information on the Junior Recycling Club contact the Waste Education Officer on 01244 973574.
