The 2009 Junior Recycling Officer of the Year Competition is underway, and we are receiving entries daily, from which six school finalists will be chosen. The Junior Recycling Club is a highly successful initiative, established in 1993 for Primary, Junior and Special Schools in Cheshire. The aim of the Club is to help promote recycling education. This is achieved by the nomination of up to two Junior Recycling Officers whose role is to persuade their school, friends and family to use the 3R's: Reduce, Re-use and Recycle

  • Reduce your waste... When you go shopping, buy items that have very little packaging - it only gets thrown away when you get home! Also, say 'No' to carrier bags in the supermarket - re-use old ones instead or take along your own reusable bag, such as a 'Bag for Life'!
  • Re-use your waste... Re-use things instead of throwing them away - margarine and ice-cream tubs can be re-used as lunch boxes, or food storage containers in the freezer.
  • Recycle your waste... Instead of throwing it away, recycle as much as possible. Find out where your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre is and use it!

Currently we have 420 Junior Recycling Officers in Cheshire!

Each Junior Recycling Officer receives a recycling pack and a certificate (presented annually at a launch event in the autumn). Each term they receive a Junior Recycling Officer Newsletter which they read out to the school in assembly. This contains competitions, poems and all sorts of recycling information. At the end of each year there is a competition to determine the Junior Recycling Officer of the Year. As part of their duties, the Junior Recycling Officers are encouraged to set up recycling schemes (e.g.mobile phone and paper recycling) in school. For more information on the Junior Recycling Club contact the Waste Education Officer at lucinda.hodges@cheshire.gov.uk or phone on 01244 973574.
