Closed landfill sites are landfill sites that have come to the end of their useful life and are full.

The County Council has a responsibility to ensure that closed landfill sites remain stable and so regular monitoring is undertaken. Old landfill sites can be restored to form useful recreational land.

 There are 12 closed landfill sites in Cheshire:

Backford Borrow Pit (Chester), Brownlow Quarry (Congleton), Hassell Road (Alsager), Newgate (Wilmslow), Pyms Lane (Crewe), Rivacre Valley (Ellesmere Port), Whitley Pit (Higher Whitley) ,Witton (Northwich), Clayhill (Neston), Croxton Lane (Middlewich), Lowerhouse (Bollington) and New Road (Winsford).
