Monitoring Leachate

The movement of substances through soils and rocks to surfacewater and groundwater is known as leaching and the solution they are carried in is the leachate
The Waste Management Service is responsible for monitoring and controlling landfill leachate, groundwater and surface waters on the closed landfill sites. Landfill leachate is water containing soluble materials which are picked up as it drains through the landfill waste. It is important to make sure that this does not escape the site and get into rivers and canals as it can be extremely harmful to the environment. |

Deep cylindrical holes (boreholes) are dug from which water can be extracted and tested. The Council carefully monitors water samples from:
- Boreholes located within the body of the landfill (for landfill leachate)
- Boreholes on the immediate perimeter of the landfill (to assess potential for lateral groundwater contamination within the water table)
- Surface waters such as brooks, rivers and canals near the site
- Surface water drainage facilities
Ecological Monitoring and Research Studies
Witton (Northwich) and Hassall Road (Alsager) closed landfill sites are designated areas supporting nature conservancy with controlled public access. Ecological and scientific studies take place on these sites due to their recognised biological importance. Cheshire Wildlife Trust, the Forestry Commission and the Environment Agency provide guidance on restoring the landfill sites.
